Joint statement by joint coordination headquarters of Russia and Syria on the problems of the return of Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons in the context of sanctions pressure from Western countries and the spread of coronavirus infection
Russian and Syrian Joint Coordination Committees are constantly working to restore peaceful life in the Republic, to assist Syrian citizens in their voluntary, safe and decent repatriation in compliance with all anti-epidemic requirements. Today 2 231 694 Syrian citizens returned to the places of chosen residence, as a result of the joint activity.
At the same time, the United States of America and its allies have organized and are imposing short-sighted policy of harsh restrictions against the people of the Syrian Arab Republic who have stopped international terrorism, with the aim to "strangle" economically the country and isolate it in the international arena. The dire economic situation, therefore, leads to a slowdown of the repatriation process and of the rebuilding of vital infrastructure in Syria. All of this comes to show the use of double standards by certain Western countries, misinterpreting the concepts of human rights and humanitarian principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
At the same time, the damage caused by Americans and their satellites to the Syrian state leads to a humanitarian catastrophe that could cause a new migration crisis. According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, today the number of Syrian people in need is growing, and the USA and western countries do not admit the responsibility for this catastrophe.
It is a matter of serious concern that this situation in Syria is established in the run-up to the fifth EU summit in Brussels. The forum, which is supposed to organize effective measures of humanitarian assistance to people in distress, is being held without the participation of representatives of the Syrian government and is actually being used as a platform for the formulation of the next sanctions restrictions. European Union representatives, while claiming their commitment towards the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian State, "turn a blind eye" to the illegal occupation of Syrian territory and plundering of its national wealth by the United States and its allies.
We consider the organization of European conferences on the Syrian issues to be utterly useless without Syrian participation and we urge them, instead, to stop politicizing the situation in Syria, stop imposing the unilateral short-sighted policy of harsh restrictions and concentrate their efforts on providing real assistance to the long-suffering Syrian people.
We are convinced that illegal occupation of Syrian territories by Western military contingents, their destabilizing activities and illegal sanctions policies require the high priority attention from the entire international community, as it complicates the rebuilding of the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian state.
